Welcome from the

Head of Boarding

Our boarding community is vibrant and close-knit. We combine the best of the support and guidance of a traditional boarding school with the autonomy and freedom only possible in a small, sixth-form only setting.

Our boarding houses and staff provide a comfortable and caring environment tailored specifically for older students. Boarding in the heart of Cambridge allows our students to foster self-reliance within a supportive framework, serving as a purposeful stepping stone to university and beyond.

The experience of

Boarding with us

  • Location

Our boarders appreciate our central location, situated close to cosmopolitan Mill Rd with many restaurants and stores selling international produce. We are 5 minutes’ walk from a park, gym and swimming pool, and 15 minutes from the city centre. The teaching buildings are also only a short walk or cycle away.

    Home from home

The houses are staffed by our friendly, experienced and well-trained boarding team to provide a comfortable, secure environment that quickly feels like a home from home. We will help you to develop the independence you need to thrive at university and beyond. It’s the perfect balance of support and freedom.

    Pastoral care

You will get to know our dedicated boarding staff extremely well. The Matron will look after all your daily needs including booking appointments with a doctor, dentist or optician when required and will meet with you regularly to check how things are going. Teachers will also meet with you individually each half-term for academic support.

    Activities

In addition to cinema trips, weekend evening activities might feature a murder mystery evening, karaoke, bowling, a table football competition, film evening, or visiting an escape room. Regular weekly sporting sessions such as basketball and badminton are available whilst weekend activities can include climbing, archery and paddle boarding.

    Age range

Full-time boarding is available to UK and International A Level students aged 16 or over. Our boarding is specifically tailored to the requirements of this older age range and boarders enjoy the independence that living away from home brings whilst feeling comfortable and secure in a friendly and sociable community of like-minded peers.

    Study time

There is compulsory study time Monday to Thursday from 7–9pm. Boarders study in their own rooms, with academic staff on hand to provide help and guidance if required. This supports students to complete assignments, coursework and revision in a productive and motivating space and to build good study habits for the future.

    Living with us

    Boarding Life

  • What makes our boarding special?

Our homely, comfortable boarding set-up is distinctive. As we cater exclusively for older boarders, there is an emphasis on managed independence with the aim of developing self-reliance and the acquisition of valuable life skills in preparation for university and beyond. Our boarders move relatively freely around Cambridge, enjoying living in this beautiful student-focused city.

  • Flexibility and freedom

We don’t have Saturday school or compulsory weekend activities as we understand that, as older students, you have your own interests and value your free time. There is no requirement to pack up rooms during half-terms or the Christmas and Easter holidays, and we don’t have fixed exeat weekends when boarders have to leave. Instead, you can request an exeat any weekend.

  • Food and dining

Our boarding house has its own dining room, so you can share wholesome, delicious meals with your friends before and after classes. We work hard to ensure our food is balanced and nutritious, so you’ve got all the energy you need to make the most of every day. There’s plenty of choice, and we cater for most special dietary needs, from vegetarian to Halal.

  • Social spaces

We have a well-equipped common room in the boarding house, providing a great space for you and your fellow boarders to socialise and relax. You'll find a digital TV and DVD/Blu-Ray player, lots of comfy seating, and facilities for making tea, coffee and snacks. Our boarding house has a lovely private garden, in which our students enjoy both relaxing and studying in the summer.

  • A home away from home

    Accommodation & Facilities

Our boarding is mixed with boys and girls having separate and secure living areas. Rooms are single-occupancy, spacious, comfortable and modern, most with ensuite facilities, and students have plenty of shared social and study spaces to take advantage of.

With peaceful private gardens, a bright dining room serving delicious and nutritious food freshly prepared onsite, and well-equipped common rooms, Stephen Perse Cambridge students really feel at home with us.

    Our Sixth Form

The Stephen Perse Cambridge Sixth Form offers the perfect preparation for university life and beyond.
