Last week saw the beginning of the Invictus games, with an outstanding openi
ng ceremony taking place on Monday and the first British gold medal being awarded to Micky Yule on Tuesday. Along with this, the week also saw the first Diamond league athletics meet of the season in Doha, bringing British success for Eilidh Doyle in the 400m hurdles and multiple seasonal records. Other British success this week includes Johanna Konta, who has progressed to the second round of the Italian Open after defeating Johanna Larsson, and Joe Root, scoring a double century against Surrey before the game was halted by rain.

be held at Boleyn Ground, as, after 112 years, West Ham are abandoning the ground and moving to the Olympic stadium where they will remain for the 2016-17 season and the foreseeable future. However, more positively, it has recently been announced that British referee Mark Clattenburg will be refereeing the Champions league final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on the 28th of May in AC Milan’s San Siro stadium. This event follows the FA cup final between Crystal Palace and Manchester United, which takes place 7 days later, on the 21st, and will also be refereed by Clattenburg.
After the successes of last week, this week’s sport definitely has a lot to match up to, however, don’t be disappointed as, on paper, it looks to be another great week of exhilarating sports action.
The week begins with the Diving World Championships, in which Great Britain has already won gold for mixed synchronised and is open to winning many more.
On Friday we see the opening event of this week’s Formula One Grand Prix, held in Spain, as all 22 cars (at the time of writing) take to the track in free practise
one and two, in order to gain readings to aid their cars in the race taking place on Sunday. The current standings see Nico Rosberg holding a significant lead, however, given the dominance of his rival Mercedes driver last season, Lewis Hamilton, and the vast improvements made by Ferrari already this year, a clear victory is definitely not on the cards and thus should lead for an exciting race.
The Rugby League game this weekend sees St Helens take on Salford on Saturday for what should be an easy home victory, however, as we have already seen across multiple sports this season, upsets do happen.
In Ruby Union, Saturday Racing 92 face the mighty Saracens in the European Champions Cup final. This makes for a tense watch as both teams topped their groups, however, if the stats don’t lie then we should see a Saracens victory, given they progressed from the group stages with 28 points, compared to Racing 92’s 22.
Saturday also sees the finale to the Women’s FA Cup, with Chelsea Ladies taking on Arsenal Ladies in what has been a tight competition all season and should make a great finale, due to the competitive nature of both teams througho
ut the season. Saturday also signifies the end of the Barclays premier league, with all 20 teams in action at various grounds across the country, however, realistically there is only the only competition within the league is between the bottom three, excluding the already relegated Villa, who are competing to avoid the drop. There is greater competition in the leagues below, with the Championship, League One and League Two all concluding the season with the first legs of the play-off games on both Saturday and Sunday.
