The Stephen Perse is committed to making it as easy as possible to travel to our schools. There are many ways in which our students travel to and from school, ranging from active transport modes (walking, scooting, cycling), to taking public transport (such as the Park & Ride buses, and train services).
We encourage our students to undertake active transport where safe and practical to do so. Further information on each mode of transport is provided below, listed from the most to least environmentally friendly:
From the Junior School upwards, children are encouraged to cycle to school where possible. Bikeability sessions are provided for pupils in Year 6 to help develop road awareness.
Please see the map below, indicating the local cycle paths that can be used by students to cycle to and from our sites within Cambridge. We are nearby to Route 11 of the National Cycleway, which connects villages in South Cambridgeshire to the City Centre, and is the main cycle route from the North of the city into the centre.
There are numerous organisations that support individuals with cycling; below are a select few that parents/students may find helpful for cycling to your school site:
CamCycle (a local cycling NGO) provides excellent maps outlining cycling routes around the city, and advice on the rules as to where you can and cannot cycle in the city.
Cambridgeshire County Council provides an extensive array of cycle maps for Cambridge and the surrounding areas here. You can access the ‘Cambridge Cycle Map’ here.
CycleStreets is a UK-wide cycle journey planner system (based in Cambridge), which lets you plan routes from A to B by bike. It is designed by cyclists, for cyclists, and caters for the needs of both confident and less confident cyclists.
Please ensure your child has a roadworthy bicycle that is regularly serviced and insured against theft, a high visibility jacket, working lights (front and back), a helmet, and a bike lock.
The Stephen Perse is committed to assisting parents in travelling to their child’s nursery or school site in the most sustainable and practical way possible. Each urban setting has the space and ability to receive cargo bikes to transport children and unload safely, off the adjoining road.
Bicycle Storage
Stephen Perse Cambridge EFYS (Salisbury Villas, Shaftesbury Site): For parents cycling children to their nursery site, both Salisbury Villas and Shaftesbury site have space available for parents to lock and store bicycle child trailers/cargo bikes.
Stephen Perse Cambridge Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form: These schools have ample cycling storage facilities for students to secure their bicycle during the school day.
Cycling to the Dame Bradbury’s Junior School
Essex County Council have resources here regarding cycling in Saffron Walden. Dame Bradbury’s School has bicycle and scooter storage facilities for students cycling to school.
Please note, any items stored at Stephen Perse sites are done so at students/parents' own risk.
Due to the central location of the Stephen Perse Cambridge sites, all are within walking distance of Cambridge Railway Station. Approximate walking distances from the station are as follows:
Stephen Perse Senior School - 15 minutes
Stephen Perse Junior School - 12 minutes
Stephen Perse EYFS Salisbury Villas - 3 minutes
Stephen Perse EYFS Shaftesbury Site - 11 minutes
Public bus routes (operated by Stagecoach, Guided Busway vehicles, and Park & Ride buses) are also a convenient option for travelling to our Stephen Perse Cambridge sites from many surrounding locations. You can find Stagecoach network and zone maps here.
As of 2025, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority has launched the Tiger bus pass, offering bus fares for just £1 for those under 25. The Tiger pass can be used to travel by bus anywhere within the Combined Authority region. This includes buses operating the city’s Park & Ride scheme.
The Stephen Perse Cambridge sites are well served by the five Cambridge Park & Ride sites (please find linked maps below):
PR1: Madingley Road - The closest ‘drop’ location to the Senior School is St. Andrew’s Street (opposite the Grand Arcade).
PR2: Newmarket Road - This vehicle services the Drummer Street bus station.
PR3: Trumpington - Conveniently, this route can drop passengers at the bus stop on Trumpington Road opposite the Stephen Perse Sixth Form Rosedale Building.
PR4: Babraham Road - The most convenient stop for students using this service is located at the Cambridge Railway Station, a short walk to the Senior School.
PR5: Milton - As with the Newmarket Road service, this service stops at the Drummer Street bus station.
In conjunction with our partner Kura by Zeelo, we provide a school transport bus service using a combination of Stephen Perse vehicles and an external coach operator. There are several routes covering a wide geographical area bringing students from the local villages and Cambridge Park & Ride locations to our Senior School, Cambridge Junior School and Dame Bradbury's sites.
This service is predominantly aimed at assisting younger children (Year 6 and below) who do not have independent travel options permitted by the School available to them. Parents can access live vehicle tracking and monitor when their child embarks and disembarks via the Kura by Zeelo app.
For timetables, pricing, and booking information, please follow this link to our dedicated Home-To-School-Transport (HTST) website.
Our 2024-25 route map is shown below (routes may change year to year). Please note this is an illustrative guide and may not show every stop. Detailed timetables can be found on our HTST website.
All Stephen Perse sites can be reached by vehicle. However, to reduce the impact of driving to school (and the associated emissions and contributory congestion), parents are encouraged to first explore the travel modes listed above.
Understanding that it is not always possible (or practical) to use the above modes of travel, the Stephen Perse is pleased to offer parents the use of the ‘HomeRun’ travel app. The HomeRun App promotes and facilitates an array of sustainable travel solutions, such as journey sharing, travel buddies and independent travel. HomeRun is a secure service that is free for you to use and accessible only by Stephen Perse parents and staff members.
The Stephen Perse uses the following apps to assist students in their travel to school:
Homerun promotes and facilitates an array of sustainable travel solutions, such as journey sharing, travel buddies and independent travel.
Kura by Zeelo is used with our Home-To-School-Transport service, where parents can track their child's school journey.
